Department Overview

The Department of Legal Services provides comprehensive legal advisory and administrative support to the Federal Judicial Service Commission. The Acting Head of Department coordinates and supervises all activities of the department and reports directly to the Executive Secretary of the Commission.

The core functions of the Department include: drafting and vetting legal documents; rendering legal advice and opinions on legal matters; handling matters relating to land including Right of Occupancy (R of O), Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and Re-certification; briefing external solicitors; liaising with external solicitors on court matters including both civil and criminal matters; conducting legal searches on relevant title documents; perfecting legal documents where applicable; liaising with the Federal Ministry of Justice and other law enforcement agencies when the need arises; ensuring safe custody of the Commission's seal; and handling Gazette matters for the Federal Courts and the Commission.

Units
Litigation Unit — Liaising with external solicitors on court matters (civil and criminal), liaison with the Federal Ministry of Justice and other law enforcement agencies, and rendering legal advice and opinions
Solicitors Unit — Drafting and vetting contract documents, handling matters relating to the Commission's property and recertification, and conducting legal searches on relevant title documents
Gazette Unit — Annual Gazetting and publication of all Appointments, Transfers, Confirmation of Appointments, Promotions, Conversions, Upgrading and Advancements of staff of the Federal Courts and the Commission (established July 2021)
