The late James Ajibola Idowu Ige was born in Zaria in northern Nigeria on 13 September, 1930. When he was only 14-years-old, Bola Ige left his hometown and moved to the Western region where he attended Ibadan Grammar School from 1943 – 1948. Bola Ige proved to be a fast learner and quickly moved on to University College in London.
After earning his law degree and graduating in 1959, Bola Ige was called to the bar in London’s highly esteemed Inner Temple. That same year he established his own firm, known as Bola Ige & Co. Before long, Ige earned a tremendous amount of respect and a well-deserved reputation as an astounding and inspiring orator. He spoke out frequently for civil rights and democracy on behalf of people everywhere.
Due to his tireless efforts, Ige was appointed as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. While working diligently to further his legal career, he also managed to find the time to write and publish several meritorious books. In time, he also entered the world of politics. Chief Bola Ige served in the Federal Executive Council as Minister of Justice and was also Member of the ission of Nigeria, for the benefit and glory of his country.
Tragically, Ige was murdered in December, 2001. He will always be remembered as a humble public servant, a promoter of peace and civil rights, and a powerful orator. Following his death, a book of articles and tributes was published in memorial of this extraordinary man.
